Wiring question

Hello all, I'm trying to finish up a project and needed to add a rheostat to control how fast a spinner spun, but haven't had any luck with the wiring. I've attached a pic of what it looks like (poor drawing skills so bear with me).

But there are three posts connected to the back of the base of the dial / knob. Anyone have any ideas with this?

thanks,
Chris

If I remember correctly, (which means I'm probably wrong) . One lead is your "hot" wire, another is your ground and the last one is your load. But you have to be very careful, choosing the wrong rheostat that doesn't match your load will cause severe damage to all components involved..

Almost 1 is your hot (usually black) a neutral (usually white) and a ground bare copper or green insulation are you connecting it to 120V straight to the wall or romex coming from panel? because you might start a fire if its not rated for at least 20A BE CAREFUL!!
