Weldon Substitute for DIY Acrylic Sump

I need to find a substitute for weldon acrylic bonder. I cant find it in my area at all. I must have called 10 places from construction specialty stores to NAPA auto parts.

The one place recommended a 2 part plastic welding kit called Versachem Plastic Welding. Anyone have experience with this or any substitute for weldon?

That's an epoxy type material, definitely not an option if you're constructing a sump. I'd recommend going online and getting weldon 4 and weldon 16 if you're building one from scratch.

mj, don't use a two part epoxy for trying to bond acrylic. It simply isn't going to work. If you can't find it any other way, search for Weldon and order it online. A lot of places that carry it.

I bought my weld-on #4 using info from melevsreef.com. Here is the info from the site.

Quickseal - ask for Max Plumhoss
(574) 272-8695
(574) 272-5004 (fax number for subsequent orders) Weld-On #4 - 4oz - $4
Weld-On #4 - 1 pint - $7.90
Needle Tip Applicators - $2.65

Note: Weld-On #4 is considered hazardous material in California, and there will be an additional HAZMAT upcharge of $20. Placing an order for a pint of Weld-On #4 and two applicator bottles plus shipping & handling should run about $28.
Weld-On #16 is considered hazardous material nationwide. A 1.5oz tube is $2.25, but there is a $20 additional HAZMAT upcharge. Maybe just look at it as a tube that costs $22.50.

Hope this helps.

I've also never seen or heard anyone who has been successful at finding it at Home Depot. You'll most likely need to refer to a plastics company, and online is probably the easiest solution.

Ill just update the thread.

I found weldon number 16 at a local plastics place in a tube and then i ordered weldon number 3 off of ebay. I used the #3 to build the tank then i used the #16 to fill in the small leaks it had. I had a plastics company cut the acryllic for me.

Overall, the entire thing came out good. I built a 60"x15"x15" sump out of one sheet of 1/4" acryllic. It cost about $200 for the acryllic and having them cut it.

It has a refugium on the left, return in the middle, and the skimmer on the right with inlets on both sides of the sump. Pretty similar to this: http://www.melevsreef.com/acrylics/sumps/f/sump_f.html

So far so good. I'd encourage anyone thinking about building a custom sump to give it a shot. Not as difficult as i thought.
