sump/refuge help

I currently have a 55 gal reef and am in the process of placing a 30 gal refugium underneath the 55. I have limited knowledge of how, and what I should do. I know I need an overflow and a pump pumping water back up, but for exact specs I am at a loss. If anyone has any good info, or can suggest (hopefully step-by-step) a surefire way to make a refuge/sump please help.

OK, a couple of questions first.

what do you want to do with the sump? will it be used for holding stuff you do not want to put in the tank, like heaters or skimmers. are you hoping to use it to get more flow in your system?

my philosophy is to have the return pump just a little stronger than the amount of water your skimmer returns. this is assuming you will have a skimmer in the sump. the more flow you put through the sump the greater the chances of micro bubbles getting introduced into the display. you can work around this some by adding baffles.

if you are running your skimmer on a mag 5 then i would also use a mag 5 for the return. this is a good ballpark. you will also want to get an overflow that can handle the amount of flow your pump will be returning to the tank. it is a good idea to take into account the head pressure of the pump. how much gph the pump puts out a X number of feet above the pump. if the top of the tank is only 3-4 feet off of the ground this could be somewhat negligable but if the tank top is over 6 feet the flow could be substantially less.

hth,

G~
