sump muffler

I built a giant sump muffler today. My tank is 375 gallons so this is a large unit. It can be made smaller to suite your tank. Here is the model I made...

The parts...

It consists of a two inch inner feed pipe. The next ring is a four inch diameter pipe, the next is a six inch diameter pipe and the final section is a Reef Crystals salt bucket.

I glue a piece of acrylic to one end of the four inch pipe...

and cut teeth on the other end.

The teeth are three inches tall. They are for the six inch pipe to sit on and give clearance for the water. I cap one end of the six inch pipe with a piece of acrylic drilled to accept a two inch PVC pipe....

The two inch pipe goes through the hole via two couplings. I used one straight coupling and one 90 elbow. You could use two straight couplings if you needed to go taller (like I should have).

I glue the two inch inner pipe to the fitting and it looks like this...

I then put the assembly over the four inch pipe...

and let it rest on the teeth...

continued in the next post...

I glued a 2" union to the pipe and put the whole assembly into the bucket...

I put all of that in the sump and plumbed it to the overflow...

I made a smaller one of these for Akwar'eum #1 and it worked great for keeping the water noise to a whisper and the bubbles contained. The only thing I didn't show is the vent hole drilled in the acrylic top of the six inch pipe. You can make this thing any size you want to fit any size sump. See Barb Mazz's thread for a nifty high tech looking one her plumber made from my model.
