sump baffle question
i'm looking at upgrading my rubbermain sump with a 55gall tank sump.
how much spacing do you need between each plate of a baffle to allow sufficient water to pass through?

one inch is usually considered minimum, but i prefer 2". this allows a slower water velocity. allows more air bubbles to be evacuated before getting to your return pump.

I'll go 2 inches then. here is a quick drawing of my sump. it's missing a lot of details, but see any problems?

that is what i thought but how does the water get in and out of there? i would not keep the water level that high in the sump if the water is suppose to go over the top edge into the fuge. when the power goes out the drain water from the display would overflow the sump.

I was thinking of putting some holes in the fuge area to allow some water to flow through, but at a reduced rate.
that's a good point about the sump level.

thanks, i've been meaning to post a picture for a while. it's been working great so far. I really like using a glass tank as opposed to a rubbermaid tub because I can see what's going on.

Nice sump. What did you use for your baffles? Glass or acrylic?

I used glass. A local glass shop cut all the pieces and I drilled some holes in for the refugium/fuge, drain/return from display, and return to display.
once the glass was cut, it was pretty easy to assemble. I did shave 1/8" off my horizontal measurements so I could fit the glass plates in. I probably could have avoided that, but I didn't want to make another trip out to the glass shop.
also, the 2" for the baffle did the trick. no bubble survives my 2" baffle.

looks very good!!!
how high does the water get when you shut off the return pump? simulated power failure. that water level just looks really high to me.
did you run a bead of sillycone over the glass baffles on the top so that you do not cut yourself by accident on the glass baffles.

The water level is high, but i turn it off everyday during feedings and it's not close to overflowing. I wanted to increase the total water volume in my system. I haven't tested it, but I estimate I could add about 7-8 more gallson of water when off without it overflowing.
i never thought of putting a bead of silicon on the top of the glass plates.
