Styrofoam hood?
I am assembling a light hood.
The support frame for the lights will be wood.
I thinking of using easily shaped styrofoam for the exterior & keeping it light (not heavy).
Has anyone used a Styrofoam "shell" for their hood??
At my local German "Home Depot" it comes in 48"X36"X1" sheets.

Is this the raw styrofoam sheet or the fancy stuff thats black film laminate on one side and silver laminate on the other? They have that isnulated sheeting here in the states and its neat stuff for DIY
I think the regular styro sheet would work but you will want to line it with some reflective mylar foil or something. I dont recommend aluminum foil because of contamination potential.
Good luck with the project

it should work. i am guessing it is the house siding insulation you are talking about. it is either pink or blue depending on manufacterer. one side it has a film covering. i would be concerned about melting. if the lights are to close it could melt the foam.

I'm not sure if the stuff is fire proof either. Sounds pretty dangerous to me.

Seeaffe, Where in germany are you. I spent a lot of time overthere. It has been 20 years ago, boy do I miss the food!!!!! Would give my eye teeth for some brochen. I lived on those hard rolls. Anyway....I would be a little causious about using foam. Heat is going to be a degrading issue and strength over the length might be an issue as well. Why the concern with the weight? Most of those buildings over there are made to hang a tank from the ceiling. If it is just the ease of getting to them or hanging initially, they make a fixture pulley system that will raise and lower the fixture. Works similar to the window blinds. Well thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

Right now I'm popping the ceramic top of a 7.5% Altenmunster .5 liter bottle of beer....still $11.50 for a case of 20 bottles.
Once I get my "live sand" from a LFS north of Ramstein & my "live rock" from K-town.....I will drink "a few" & have some "shwanks".

K-Town Raiders!!!
