Steel stands?

Hola!

I've got family access to a steel mill, and was considering having my stand fabricated out of steel to save a little space.

But just think of the rust!!

Good idea, bad idea, whaddya think?

Good idea. Many have painted their steel stands with Krylon spray paint or something similar. Just hae to be careful since the paint can get scratched off to bare metal. I am going to have mine powder coated instead.

i would either powder coat or epoxy paint the steel.
you could go aluminum or stainless too though and not have to worry.

Where do you take something to have it powder coated? A auto paint place? Any idea about cost?

Or should I just prime & paint w/ epoxy?

aluminum and SW do not go well together either. if an Al stand was to be used i would get it anodized after construction.

Just do a search for powder coat at www.DexOnline.com. I'm paying about $85 for my stand which I think is a pretty good deal. I've heard of quotes in the $200 range for something similar. It is cheaper for a can of paint at your local hardware store but the results are nearly as durable.

Look for a type of paint called hammertone if I recall correctly. My buddy did his VW shrouding with it. It does not lay on as clean as paint but the texture might look good on your stand. That will run you seven or eight bucks a can maybe but looks great and it is bulletproof.

Powdercoating involves baking on a plastic finish, available in a rainbow of colors and SW resistant. Down side is , it's not cheap and has to be sent out.
Epoxy paint is tough as nails but toxic during the spraying process, once its cured its good to go.
I really like Perrys idea of the hammetone paint, its a nice effect. Should be durable as hell if properly prepped and clear coated

Look in the Yellow Pages under powercoating. I have found that the first item you want powercoated normally costs more that you would like but each item you add to the order tends to be much cheaper.. I think it's more of a time to setup rather that materials kind of a thing.

If you prep the frame up first - it may be less $$ - man all that grindging and sanding.

I'll stick with wood- thank you

I am getting a cheaper rate because I will be using whatever color they are already set up for. Hopefully next week they will be running a white or light gray. This week was all black. The black would look nice but I think it would show water spots too easily.
