Siphon from tank straight to sump??

I tried using an overflow box, and it turned out being much louder than I would like in my "living room." Would it be possible just to have a siphon from the tank straight to your sump? It seems that this would help to reduce noise.

Perhaps making so the pipe only stick .5"-1" down into the water in the display tank (with a guard to keep fish from getting sucked in), and starting a siphon straight into your sump. As long as both ends of the pipe are submerged, would there be any major problems?

Flooding when return pump is off comes to mind.

There are some DIY designs for overflows you can check out.

I agree that overflow boxes can be somewhat noisey, I had that problem when I coverted my 75 Gallon tank from cannister to sump filtration.

The benefits of water clarity and lower nitrates far outweigh the noise factor IMO.

Would flooding from the the return pump be a problem any more that with an overflow, if the pipe only sticks down into the water as low as the spaces between the overflow teeth would go? Once water in the display tank goes lower that the pipe.... siphon breaks! As long as you calculated the amount of extra water you can expect to have in the sump if the return pump goes off and leave enough room.... what would be the problem?

A properly setup overflow box will restart on it's own when the power comes back on. An overflow box does not stop by breaking the siphon, the level of the water in the tank/box starts and stops the flow.

A straight siphon tube will not restart on its own. Once the siphon breaks, your tank will flood when the pump comes back on.

Would you still get a lot noise from water rushing down to the sump?

I don't know that it would flood the tank... If you had the pump elevated some and the baffles keeping most of the water from coming in to the "pump chamber."
The pump would probably run dry when the power came back on.
I'm not sure how to fix that.

Just build a silencer on the HOB overflow. Many just have an open tube that causes noise. The siphon is impossible because you just cant match the siphon and pump return rate.

Which problems would a Durso Standpipe solve? It seems to be promoted as helping with overflow noise...

How would you reduce the noise of water running down the pipe into your sump?

It quiets the sucking sound from the top. on the bottom there are many more options on how to either slow the water or direct it. It really is a matter of adding a couple tweaks here and there and you can make them pretty much dead silent.

Without seeing your set up, I have no idea where to begin

as for ways of solving noise on the bottom... would it be better to slow the flow?
