resevoir level gage ("sight glass")

Okay so i am completely new to the forum, but i installed this mod yesterday and thought I would share as it is really handy.

I have a 5 gallon bucket used for a resevoir under my stand that i have hooked to a kent marine float valve to top off evap with kalk/RODI water. Well anyways, the bucket is obviuosly not clear, and I have the lid on to limit evaporation from the bucket itself.

It was getting very old lifting that lid off once a week to check the level and even worse to find it completely empty and my small powerhead in the bottom running dry (used to keep kalk well mixed).

So where the JG speedfit bulhead comes out of the bottom of the bucket, I installed a tee, one end going to the float valve in my sump, and the other i inserted clear RO tubing and ran it up the side of the bucket. Now I have a water column I can visibly check which is even with the level inside the bucket.

Welcome to TRT!!!

sight glasses are a great way to view liquid levels in dark objects. thank you for reminding me of this. i have a brine sump that i was trying to guage the level in, that would work perfectly. get me a couple of Uniseals and some vinyl tubing and i would be good to go!!

great idea.

do you have any pics?

Here ya go.......as you can see the bulkhead taps into the bottom, and the tee taps right into it. The vertical tube runs up the side of the 5gal bucket and is vented to atmosphere, thereby indicating the level in the bucket accurately.

My next idea is to find a way to affix the tube such that it runs directly up the side, and add a scale so I can log how much kalk is being added, and also more generally how much I am skimming off/evaporating on average.

Pretty simple, but I think this could have a lot of applications.

Hey, funny that you mention a brine sump. i have been toying with the idea of integrating some sort of hatchery to feed my tank......seems like an excellent idea for those weekend vacations, etc.
