Refugium Questions on 40 Gallon

howdy fellars, ive recently started my tank and im really interested in a refugium... i have plans for one and all i really need to know is what size pumps im going to need and more ideas on plumbing. i have a 40 Gallon tank and was planning to make a 10-15 gallon refugium. the pics should show how i want to set it up but dont know how possible it is... im 18 and dont know much... i just know designing... give me your thoughts on my idea. My graphics card wont let me downgrade anything so the pictures are in a zip format... sorry about that.

The main problem I see with the drawing as I interpret them is that you are drawing water from the tank without the safty features of an overflow setup, since the drawing shows but the intake to the fuge and the return well below th water line, it will drain down to at least that point. The setup you show for the in and out on the main tank is typical of closed loops, ie the circulation pump is plumbed inline with the in and out, with no part of the system open to air, hence the term closed loop
What you are showing looks more like a typical sump setup, water flows into an open sump, then is pumped back into the main tank. An overflow of some kind is neccessary to maintain a set water level in the tank and prevent the sump from flooding
Originally refugiums were a seperate tank setup slightly higher than the display with a slow stream of water pumped from the display into the refuge, which then gravity drains back into the display. That prevents the copepods and other planktonal issue from the animals breeding in the refugium from being shredded by a pump or powerhead.
Over time the refuge concept kinda got absorbed into algae filters combined with sumps and the lines blurred

why do you want a refugium? why not just run a sump?

thanks... I like what u can do with a refugium they can be as interesting as the main tank. i did think that the pumps would shread the pod and maybe its not a good idea... i guess im looking into plans of an overhead refugium... they will be up soon. gotta build them... thanks a lot though...

Ok so my resort was to make my own hang-on refug for now... Im going to then get a sump later on. i just finished my stand so i dont wanna drill any holes in something that looks good with out them. oh i got a really newby question but i have a powerfilter on the back of my 40 gallon and i was wondering if replacing my powerfilter with a protein skimmer would be fine... i would think i need some kind of filtration besides a protein skimmer... ive been looking at pictures of other aquariums and all i see on some of them are bak pak skimmers and thats it... no lines going to a sump or anything... tell me if it will work and if my design has any flaws in it... there will be a powerhead on it so dont worry. Thanks

Attached is my hang-on design
