questions on inline skimmer

i am (hopefully) going to build a Geoff skimmer or something close. the biggest problem stopping me is i want an inline skimmer. i want as big a skimmer as i can do for my 55 gallon project but i don't want a hob type or an insump skimmer. trying to keep as much space open in refugium (not so much for microalgae but as a refuge if needed for critters)

i have been looking at the inline skimmers online and see they seem to have a boxed base. any real reason other than something to sit the rest of the skimmer on? it also looks like thats where the water is flowing in. where do i put the inlet for the water ?
