primer or no primer?


planning on sealing my stand today. for an oil based paint is primer needed?? painting 2x6 boards

I'd use some primer, especially on pine, which is pretty soft. It will eliminate a few coats of paint.

don't want to hijack this thread but I need to paint my stand for the 180 inwall I am setting up... but it is in the same room as my running 29 won't the paint do something to my 29 gallon??? how can I avoid this?

Primer is always good it makes the paint attach to the surface better(grab).

Should start your own thread,but it can if you don't have good ventelation in the room.If not turn off everything to the tank and seal it,so the fumes don't get in.

As long as you don't get paint in the water you shouldn't have any issues. In general ambient conditions water shouldn't absorb fumes, it usuallt is expelling gasses, but if you want to be safe place a fan blowing across the water and then the paint fumes won't be able to get to the water.

Yes, always prime naked wood before painting.

You can make a "filter" for the air intake of the skimmer with some carbon and floss to remove any chemical pollutants. You can also simply run the air inlet tubing into another room or to the outside air. personally, I find that latex paints put out few fumes, nothing that simply opening a window and using a fan won't fix.
