placement of skimmer in sump

I'm planning on building a combo sump / refugium, and would like to know, which section should my skimmer pull water from?

Welcome to TRT!!!

this is an interesting question, and one of the reasons i do not think refugiums are very usefull.

what do you want to put in your refugium?

Why don't you like refugiums? Everything I read, seems to indicate that they help maintain your tank.

Phase 1 of plan is LR / LS
Phase 2 of plan add a light for plant growth.

why would you want to grow algae? to keep nutrients down, correct? well if your nutrients are all ready down than you will not be able to grow algae. if you are able to grow algae in a fuge than your nutrient levels are to high in the system.

something else that does not make sense about refugiums. where do you put the skimmer. if you put it before the refugium than it cleans the water and does not allow any nutrients to get to the refugium. if you put it after than it skimms out all of the so called "goodies" that you want to feed your tank with. so what is the point.

The placement of the skimmer comments makes sense to me. It also makes sense about the refugium comments, but i'll have to continue my refugium (reading) education.

all i want you to do is think for yourself. i have made so many mistakes in this hobby by listening to the "experts" without questioning them. i have since learned that reef keeping is quite simple. it all makes sense if you break it down to one question. what is really necessary to keep what i want in my system.

placement of skimmer though is an easy question. you want the pump that is supplying the skimmer to come directly from the drain water. then drain the skimmer into the next compartment that will end up feeding the return pump.

You just want to put it as far away from the return area as possible, incase you have tons of micro bubbles...

I would by choice put it after the refugium though....catch 22.

Refugiums, serve an other purpose those who use Ca Reactors, the micro algae can suck up the excess Co2, they can also stabilize PH swings if you light the fuge at night while the other lights are off.

I agree though about the nutrient comment, although in a closed system with properly feeding fish, will we ever have a nutrient free system?
