Paint-On Electrical Insulation?

Just a quick question.

I caught a brief glimpse of this boatbuilder TV show, and saw this guy waterproofing all exposed electrical contacts with a paint-on liquid insulation. It was black and thick and dried to a hard rubbery consistency.

Does anyone know what this product is, and are there any problems to using it for reeftanks (for DIY light hoods)?

thanks

same here. i don't know how well it will work in water. but i have used it many times back when i was installing custom car stereos. it worked great. you jsut painted it on, it was about the consistancy of woodworkers glue, perhaps a little thicker. then it dried to rubber. was much easier than using shrink tube, or tape, in hard to reach areas.

i used it under the hood in the engine compartments for alarm wires as well, and never had any problems with it. i used ot buy it from my stereo distributer back then, not sure where you would pick it up commercially.

The label says "weather proof" which means I would not trust it in water but for occasional salt spray it is great

if this is the same stuff used to coat tool handles to make them more confortable, you can find it in the adhesive section of most Home Destruction Stores.

Geoff, I believe its a little different than the tool dip. As I recall it comes in a can with brush attached tot he lid with some glues and such.
The dip it stuff would prolly work OK if you can get it on the parts you want protected

I've used this before on boat wiring and it works well. FWIW it doesn't seem to keep well once the can has been opened.

heh, I use this stuff all the time in the tank, although not submersed. I use a copper crimp sllice, then hea shrink, then coat the entire connection with the goop. I have found that the stuff will store better if you put the entire opened can (with the lid tightly closed) inside a piece of tupperware wth the lid sealed.

OK heres a thought, tightly close the lid, turn the can upside down and store it in a suitable tupperware, that way any trapped air will cause the product to skin over at the bottom, if at all
