"Is there an advantage to having a HOB overflow versus an acrylic in-tank with a drilled bulkhead? Right now my tank isn't drilled, but I was planning on having it drilled pretty soon."

No advantage on an acrylic tank, you can drill it to suit your needs, be creative in overflow construction, I like the coast to coast style overflows.
Hang on overflows are lifesavers for tanks that cant be drilled, and usually cheap enough to play with before settling on a final design for that next bigger, better tank a head

Jetski,

That is the coolest DIY siphon overflow I have seen yet. Did you design and build that?

You should check out the overflow that I built www.randystacye.com>>

I’ve tweaked it a bit since I uploaded the pics, but the basic design is still the same. I've found that the 90 elbows don't take as much flow as the Durso pipes that use the large pipe bushings (if you know what I mean).

I did not design this. I found the design on Singapore Reef Club. And I did what Geoff said regarding the sizes and it gushes water with noise. Very efficient.

how noisy is it? where is the sound coming from? if the noise is coming from inside the tank, than the outer tube is to small. if it is coming from the outside than the hole on the top of the anti-siphon tube is to big.

I like the design of the surface skimmer portion of the overflow. If the external portion fails you I would try the following.

External Portion and Siphon Tube:

External Portion w/Siphon Tube Screwed Into The Outer Overflow:

I would use this design for inside of the external portion. Oversize it and it will run dead silent.

I have a good size Little Gient running full blast and it does not outpump this overflow. The standard Durso design wouldn't take as much flow as the design I listed above.

I hope the design you originally listed works out for you just fine (with a couple of tweaks) because that is quite probably the most compact design I've ever seen. That design wouldn't require much space at all between your tank and the wall (hardly any gap).

Im sorry. I meant to write with minimal noise. With all the pumps and filters going, you can hardly hear anything. Sorry Geoff.

Geoff,
If you get this, I have an overflow box on my 60gal, since it can't be drilled (arrrgh) and I, like everyone am concerned about times that this system could fail and floods ensue. I am experimenting with my hang on Magnum 250 as a back up to my overflow or in conjunction with it. I attached 3/4" flexible tubing to the output side of the Magnum and connected the other end to a "T" fitting as it enters the sump. The original overflow box drain pipe is also connected to the "T" fitting and it to enters the sump here. I could run the normal overflow box alone as it was intended for the most part; however, times that I would be away I could turn on the Magnum to act as a security measure. Your thoughts on this or possible problems that I might not see?
