that is a tricky question since everyones waterline is different.

mine start about 3/4" below the water line. they weirs are also 1/8" wide.

here is what i do....

i carefully build the overflow to fit neatly under the horisontal "lip" of the plastic edging that goes around the tank. (mine are all glass tanks and the plastic "rings" seem to be pretty standard regardless of brand).

then... if you look inside the tank, you will notice that the vertical part of the plastic edge goes down about a half to 3/4 of an inch. I cut the "slits" to the depth of this vertical lip. This insures that the water level has to come up to the vertical lip of the tank before going over. this insures that you can't see the water level from the front or sides. also, i have made all of my channels and teeth 1/4 wide. i made a little jig so it is easy and uniform.

hope this helps....

If you make it adjustable - you'll have to make a long back on the outside box shaped like a "U" but just upside down, just add two slots on the inside box, on the back side about 1" or 2" from each end and thread two holes on the "U".

Make the teeth 1/4" wide and 1/4" space. If you use a 1/4" bit on a 1/2" centerline, it'll come out right. Oh and make them 1 1/4" long.

yea, definately make it flood proof. many are going "country style" or toothless. this keeps the stuff from getting caught as well as inhibits algea growth.
