Overflow noise

Hey, I have a 180 gal reeftank that sits 7-8 ft behind me in my living room. Yesterday I removed the remaining bio-balls in my 2 corner overflows of my tank and now I have a huge "water rushing" noise. The water falls approximately 18 inches down the back of the overflow and I have a piece of 3/4 inch pcv pipe that is 6 inches in length pushed down into the drain bulkhead. It's no so much a gurgling noise as it is a loud splash. I don't want to put any type of material in there to quieten it because I want to avoid any detrius build-up again. I was thinking of getting longer pieces of pcv pipe so I can make the water higher and quiet the noise. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Bob

Thanks for the comment. I need to add a 175w metal halide bulb in the center of the tank, but that's another thread. Since the water falls 24 inches into the overflow, and I have a 6 inch pipe installed, that's 18 inches. I was thinking about adding an 18-20 inch pipe with a 90 pcv connector and see what happens. Make sense? I was going to add a strainer straight up with a filter that slides over it and a tube straw down the center to keep the gurgling nosie down, but I think over time the filter will clog and it'll be a pain. Besides, everything is strained through sponges in my sump anyways.

Fixed Problem!!!

Fixed it the easyway in just 30 minutes. Found this link on how to make a Durso tube. Spent $3.99 in parts at lhs and it worked like a charm. Can no longer hear the tank until you get within 2 feet. Very nice. http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

Thanks Vince. It's been quite a learning lesson on this site and I got lucky finding it last weekend. No more bio-balls/bale and the alge has subsided so far. All test readings are good and the tank is clear. I also see no build up on the glass where the return line points, I could always see it starting to grow and it pained me. Now I just have to get the standpipe tuned correctly to get rid of the rushing water noise. Thanks again.
