Ok, I tried the mag5 and it works, but it is still spitting water once in a while but since it is in the sump it does not matter. Since I used a plastic hose after the ventury I can see the air and water going in, no scum yet and it had been running for maybe 10min. I imagine there will be a break in period just like on store bought skimmers. If I was to change that pump for the 1000gph will that water spitting go away?

good, i am glad it was the pump. that skimmer looked good, so i was getting very confused there for a bit. if you have a 1000gph pump than slap that sucker on it.
unsure why the Mag 7 impellor was not working in the Mag 5. i know it works cause i just did this a month ago and it worked for me. i had a bad mag 7 body, and a good Mag 5 body. so i switched out the impellors so i would have a good Mag 7. worked great.
there is a break in period. can you see where the water level is in the skimmer?

No, I cannot see the water level but I can feel the bubles poping up when I put my hand on the pipes. If I don't get anything by tomorrow I will try the bigger pump, I like to skim wet anyhow.

you can just lengthen the outlet tube. i used those expandable couplers on mine, those barrel looking things in the pics, to control the water level in the skimmer.

Can you upgrade a mag 9.5 to a larger mag pump such as a Mag 12 or so by canging the impeller??
Just Curious,
Josh

I am not sure about those two. On my case the mag5 and the 7 have the same body, but my impeller for the mag7 for some reason does not work well on the mag5 body.

i am wondering if your mag 5 was an older one, and the Mag 7 impellor was a newer B version. about 4 years ago Mag updated something in their pumps. the replacement impellors were labeled as B. the label on the pump may say B on it. if it does not than i am thinking this could be the problem. you were trying to put a B impellor in a non B Mag.

It could be, the pump only says "Model 5" on it. I just got it last summer but I guess it could have sat on the shelf for a while.
I tried the 1000gph pump, it is pumping but I still ge some water spitting out once in a while. I remember looking in to the ventury and seeing a piece of plastic inside that did not quite looked like it belong there, I am going to take it off cause it may be the reason water keeps coming out.I just hooked it up so we'll see if I get any skimmate.

Well, I think I just found out why the ventury was spitting water every so often, inside the ventury there was a small piece of plastic like a sliver attached to the inside right were the hole gets smaller, this may have been flapping as the water when thru and causing it to go in to the hole. I removed that and the spitting is gone, this means I can use the pump outside the sump. I just hooked it back up so no foam yet. Will report back in a couple of hours.

glad it was something like that!!
it was very strange that you were getting water out of the hole every now and then instead of regularly.

Well, Barcochris came up to my office and he notice why I don't have any foam. Originally I had a ball gate to restrict the water comming out of the skimmer, after all the changes I made I did not have one, so the water is just passing thru the skimmer with very little contact time because the flow is not restricted. I will fix that today and see what happens.

i saw in the pic that you had a ball valve on the outlet. i was going to tell you to start closing the ball valve to raise the water level in the skimmer if it was still not producing foam. i guess that would have been hard with it gone.
if you can find one, a gate valve is much easier to adjust on a skimmer outlet than a ball valve. ball valves are very difficult to move a tiny bit.
