You can actually silicone a black or blue piece of acrylic on to the glass at the back of the tank as well sealed so no drips will show at the back of the tank!

I am a little late with this reply but, I used blue polyeurothane automotive paint on mine. It worked great. (stunk up the whole darn (Geoff Edit) house for a couple days) I used it because I had it left over at work.

i like to get a different view of my tank from the sides, and if im feeling really flexible that day, from the back. I wouldnt want to paint my tank personally.

ive heard people say they use black (or color of your choice) felt fabric to drape behind their tank. you can still get behind it to clean the glass (if you are so inclined), you dont get air bubbles, and can remove it later if you want.

the idea where you get a piece of acrylic (black or whatever) cut to the dimensions of your back glass is a good idea as well. you could place it on the inside back of the tank, or somehow attatch it to the outside back of your tank. if its outside, though, you run the risk of water dripping between the two surfaces.

I have the plastic petsmart black backing behind my tank now, but it does kinda suck because salt sometimes drips behind there and you can see some places where the backing is stuck to the glass, and other spots where its not. after I move, I think im going to do the black felt thing. unless I use my tank as a room divider, then I wont need a background!
