My current stand is built that way - biscuts and some drywall screws. Where the cross pieces meet the ends - just biscuts. The front frame and read frame no screws. The "cross" pieces that connect the two frames in the middle, I use screws. Tota l screws maybe 24. The corners post's - is just as is in the photos - two pieces joined with three biscuts and glued to form a "L".

Using a biscut cutter to cut the slot, you could use that 4" Mikita portable saw to do it, but won't be the same, you spread the glue into the slot and on the joining surfaces, place the biscuts in the "wet" slot and clamp till dry. The "biscuts" are pressed to shape, just like wafer board, the glue makes it swell in the groove - locking it together.

You could use this nethod for the frame and just finish off with a vaneere (sp) of oak, maghoany, ect.

I used the same method on my last 250gal tank (ply) stand out of solid 3/4" oak, oak 3/4" vaneere ply.

That hood frame you see in the photos - just biscuts.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to give them a try on my next hood.

Instead of using biscuits on my stand, I used lap joints with a dado blade. Screwed and glued them together. Worked excellent and you could literally drive a truck over my stand.

God i freaked when i first saw this thread till i read your last post i had already drawn a picture and written a page long reasoning on why it wouldn't be safe. I thoguht you had only used biscuts over the whole thing. The Hood will be fine with only biscuts. Unless the heat, heats up the glue(depending on what it was you used) and it falls appart. Just a thought. Otherwise looks good.

Why not? I have built another one prior to this but out of oak. Nice looking piece of furniture.
If you notice, the weight is carried by the uprights. The horozontial pieces hold then together. No racking of any kind. Have you ever used a biscut joint? Done correctly you can not take it apart without destroying the joint/wood.

One other thing, some guy's over build their stand and do not have the room under the stand for equipment.

Yeah i am an apprentice builder and am a 4th generation builder so i know the odd thing or two about construction. Yeah biscuts are very usful in the right use but i thought you had used them to support the horizontal supports for the tank. I didn't read you had screwd it until i had done about half an hours work trying to prove how it would be dangerous. No from what i can see it looks like it would be more then stable as long as its just the corner L's and the uprights that are done with biscuts.
