My current stand is built that way - biscuts and some drywall screws. Where the cross pieces meet the ends - just biscuts. The front frame and read frame no screws. The "cross" pieces that connect the two frames in the middle, I use screws. Tota l screws maybe 24. The corners post's - is just as is in the photos - two pieces joined with three biscuts and glued to form a "L".
Using a biscut cutter to cut the slot, you could use that 4" Mikita portable saw to do it, but won't be the same, you spread the glue into the slot and on the joining surfaces, place the biscuts in the "wet" slot and clamp till dry. The "biscuts" are pressed to shape, just like wafer board, the glue makes it swell in the groove - locking it together.
You could use this nethod for the frame and just finish off with a vaneere (sp) of oak, maghoany, ect.
I used the same method on my last 250gal tank (ply) stand out of solid 3/4" oak, oak 3/4" vaneere ply.
That hood frame you see in the photos - just biscuts.
