Need Stockman tuning help...
I've adapted the stockman for a 1.25" riser with an inverted 4" cap to act as a corner overflow in a diy drilled tank. I'm having issues tuning out noise and still getting good flow from it.
With a single small hole in the cap, the overflow fills up and the return pump will begin to overfill the tank. With the hole plugged, the flow improves greatly and is able to drain the level right back down. I've tried opening the hole up further and fitting an airline valve, but that just makes it act like the hole is plugged. I've dremeled out large holes in the vertical pipe, so it's certainly not a flow restriction issue. I've also experimented with raising and lowering the inverted slip adapter without luck.
The gurgle is driving me nuts. I'm only getting maybe 3-400gph out of the return pump and don't want to restrict that to tune out the noise.
I'd sure appreciate any suggestions.
Dan

Thanks. Here's the pic.
I ended up finding something workable this evening. I drilled a second hole in the cap and left the airvalve in place on the first one. Seems to work properly now.
Next I get to figure out how to silence the waterfall in the sump.
(Kinda missing the hob biowheel.)
Cheers!

i think your 4" cup is installed upside down. i thought it was suppose to open downward. i will try and double check that, but i think that is your problem.

What size bulkhead is through the bottom of the tank? You need to use the next size up in pipe for the stockman.

The bulkhead has 1" going through it. I'm running an adapter on top of it to go to 1.25" which is the core of the stockman.

Geoff: yeah he does have it correct. Ken cam up with that idea for his fuge to act as a surface skimmer if remember reading his site correctly.
Blorton: i have no idea how to "silence" the waterfall in the sump. i am combating the same problem. i will actually gravity feed everything in my sump (basement) to help (i hope). this includes a skimmer design by Geoff. that brings me to making a new thread!

i have not checked his site in a while. i remember it used to be the other way around. i guess it would not matter, but it would then not work exactly like the Dursa stantpipe then. i really ought to try and meet Stockman at some point. he only leaves a few minutes away from me.

I bought a stockman from premium aquatiocs, I ahve two of them in my overflow, I am seeing reduced flow (should be around 1200, Getting 7-800) could it be the standepipes or most likely the 90s that I have in the overflow to sump line? Sorry to hijack

It's most likley you're plumbing. You're tank would overflow if it was being restricted by the standpipes.
I use a 45 degree elbow below the water's surface at the end of my drain line. It's pretty silent. The water coming out of my skimmer is much louder.

I made something similar, but I'm not getting gurgles. I wouldn't mind making it quieter though.
why use an air hose or valve?

Frank,
Less air=more flow. The idea is to use the valve to find the sweet spot.
Fwiw, I basically gave up and throttled the flow back. I'm going to swap out the crazy return pump I have now for a small eheim. No sense running a 115w pump with the output choke way down just to make it usable. (shrug)
Cheers!

It's pretty important that it not be loud. I wish mine was a little quieter.
I originally set mine up without a stockman and ran it for a few days. Everyone was very happy when I added the stockman and haven't complained since.
what about the one three90s&125sump shows above? That looks like an elbow connected to a T.
