My PVC pipe overflow
My PVC pipe overflow. This isn't the actual thing, just a cad model to show the idea.
This works great. The blue colored pipe goes in the tank. The long horizontal pipe 2 inch dia and is about 40 inches long The vertical pipe is 1.5 dia and about 16 inches.
I tested the flow rate and it's over 400gph. If you want I could try to get a pic of the tank.

Why the "trap"??? Those 180's wont help your flow any.......if you want a way to clean the pipe out if necesssary just put a screw on plug on the end and a union somewhere. For maximizing flow you could actually put a 45 next to the last 90 and flex pvc down to your pump or wherever you connect next. Just an idea............. The CAD is sweet. I wish i had and knew how................

What are you trying to accomplish by having those bends?
I would think there will be a lot of restriction.

it's been running for 9 months now and no problems with stuff in getting trapped. The slot on the horizontal pipe is only 1/16 to an 1/8 wide.
as far as flow - this design gives the advantage of water head or height.
Think of it like this. If you are going to siphon out of a tank where would you place the end of the hose in the tank? At the top of the water line or at the bottom of the tank. Try it. Get a large bucket and a hose. Start a siphon and move the end of the hose up and down in the bucket. When the hose is at the bottom of the bucket the water flows thru the siphon the fastest
I did alot of playing around and the flow is alot greater at the bottom of the tank. Also, the large diameter pipe makes up for the "trap"

My bad, I tought this was your return. Already started thinking how I could use your idea in my CLS.
So the elbows keep the water in the pipe if the power goes out, right?
the pipe does not empty.

yes it maintains the siphon if the power goes out. Also, the horizontal pipe has a cap on the end. So water only gets in thru the slot. It's nice because it pulls water from across the whole back of the tank.

want to see this in reality! If you can master a CAD a picture should be easy!

Here's another cad pic.
the blue pipe is in the tank.
the drain pipe is extend up with a cap that has a small hole in it. This cap greatly reduces the noise and lets in air.
The red thingy is to represent a valve. This is used to start the siphon. I have a piece of 1/4 hose attached to the valve. so basically I open the valve and suck til I see water in the 1/4 hose then close the valve.
hope to have some real in tank pic tonight
