If I were to purchase a 175w MH retrofit kit(mogul socket+reflector) I can rest assured that the bulb assembly doesn't get hot enough to ignite the wood I would use to make a hood? Is there anything I should use to insulate the hood from the heat of the bulb/reflector?

To be on the safe side, attach a metal c channel on the mounting spot then attach the reflector to that. You could attach the reflector directly to the wood, but have plenty of ventilation (plus redundancy). Also, if you're really concerned (which anyone should be after seeing the temps they reach) you could get some thin cement board to go between the wood and reflector.

A normal distance from bulb to reflector is 4-5 inches.
