Both Geoff and Snazlord are correct in their explanation of the upturned mixing chamber injector.

The only problem with using aquaticecosystem's eductor is that there is no way to seal the low pressure/exhalant end to the downdraft pipe. The lack of a seal will interrupt your flow dynamics.

Sorry to bring this post back up, but I was wondering if you ever made the diagram of how to get the unit to sit flat on the floor?

And BTW, has anyone made a part list?

Chris, any thoughts on adapting a high flow aircleaner to the intake side? It would filter out airborne crud and baffle the noise some.

johnism-Welcome to TRT!!!

it could be any version you want it to be. the biggest limitation is the fact that it takes a huge pump to power it and it is fairly large. if the sump is big enough you can slap a mag 24 on it and let it rip. the eductor is just the air delivery system. the skimmer itself can be placed anywhere.

Galleon that looks amazing! Job well done! I love Mote! I come down during the summers and help Randy Wells in the dolphin research! Do you know him?

I came across this thread and I want to make one of these skimmers. I have been tossing around the design, and wanted input on the modifications that I made (good/bad/ugly) before I go building it.

Here's the original schematic

Here's what I was thinking

This one the water goes through the eductor, and into the skimmer body. Inside the 90 directs the flow downward into a PVC pipe "inner chamber" instead of up as before. To prevent the bubbles from going out the skimmer outlet, the water/air mix has to turn back on itself within the inner chamber and go against the incoming mix and back upwards. Bubbles go up and the water goes over the edge of the inner chamber and back downward again towards the outlet in the bottom of the skimmer.

Any thoughts on if this will work or not? See any problems in the concept?

TIA

earlier in the thread Galleon says why the inlet is upturned. if it is downturned it is shooting the aerated water down towards the outlet. this will help the bubbles to escape into the sump.

Yeah, I realize that. I actually added a pipe within the body that "catches" the flow and blocks it from flowing out the outlet with bubbles. The pipe is sealed to the bottom of the skimmer so the only way out is back at the top of the pipe. Since the water has to go upward again, then reverse and go outside the inner pipe to get down to the outlet it should lose it's bubbles in

This pic shows the water's intended pathway.

that should work. there is a calculation you should do first to make sure it will work. the volume of water that is on the outside of the tube before being removed from the skimmer needs to be bigger than the inner tube. the reason for this is so that the water flow will be slower than the inner tube allowing the air to evacuat upward instead of being swept out of the skimmer. each chamber of the skimmer needs to be at least 2 the size of the one before it so that the water velocity keeps slowing down so that the dwell time of the bubbles is increased.

Cool. I am actually considering making your mantled monster skimmer if I can't get a decent deal on a pump big enough to power the eductor version. I had chosen that DIY plan before I stumbled on these eductor types. I'd like to make this one so that I only have to run it intermitently for my 75 main + 55 sump setup.

i have also toyed with the idea of eductorizing my skimmer. i have a mag 9.5 on it now. so i may try it.

I couldn't find the PSI ratings for any Mag pumps. I actually couldn't even find a site for the manufacture of mags, just retailers. I was looking to get a mag 9 or 12, but didn't know if they'd have the needed pressure to make it work.

I have a little giant that I will be using for the return from basement sump to upstairs main, but I know it won't run both skimmer and return.

my mag 12's barely run my 2 eductors on my main system. they do make them work, just not as efficiently has a high pressure pump would. they will suck air in on occasion and make some really small bubbles though.

i have a copy of AquaticEco Systems catalog at home. this is where i find 95% of all of my pump pressure info. they have pressure curves for all of the pumps they sell. i can not remember off the top of my head what the pressure rating is, but it is at least 15'. that should be plenty to make lots of air bubbles in the skimmer.
