Question

MH requirements for 46 bowfront

howdy folks,

i am looking for input on what size and quantity MH lamps to use on my 46 gallon bowfront.
i have always heard the mantra of one lamp every two feet.
what i am wondering is if i can go with one lamp in the middle, being that my tank is 36" long.
i was thinking 175 watt lamps, but have heard that 250's would be better.
any input from experienced reefers would be much appreciated.

lights

Here's mine. I have 250wt 20K Radium, 175wt 12K, and 110wt pc 03. I wouldn't recommend a single bulb due to the shadow that you'll get off the center brace.

thanks chad.
great looking tank.
i hadn't thought about the center brace.
my only real concern is not overlighting the tank.
thanks

Welcome to TRT!!!

you could prolly get away with 2 175wers. since the bulbs will be closer than normal so the intensity would be greater than normal. if you want clams and high light SPS then i would go with 250's, but plan on the heat though.

thanks geoff,
i had figured that dueal 250s would run too hot.
i am in the process of building a canopy now, so the lights
won't be sitting right on top of the glass.
i have adjusted for six inches clearance.

Lizard, I'm rebuilding a canopy to use 2 250w MH and 2 55w PC Actinics over my 46....175's aren't enough in my mind. Also, ditch the glass cover; it will trap too much heat on top of the water surface.
