they all have different spectrums. the K rating gives you a ballpark for the spectrum it produces. the higher the K the more blue it will be. for aquarium purposes bulbs with a K rating of 6.5 or higher are acceptable. "normal" street light MH's are generally in the 4K range. way to yellow for aquarium use.
i do keep a couple of the Home Depot bulbs around for test purposes. to help me trouble shoot if it is a blown bulb or ballast. as long as the bulb is the same wattage it will work. the same goes with the ballasts.
