LED lighting
How important is the Color temp kelvin of a bulb, with cost of lighting both in terms of initial cost and day to day operation very high. I have been looking for LED lights to illuminate my 200 gal tank. I have found some but the color temp says from "3000 to 6000" I guess it varies from bulb to bulb and it is not predictable. Each bulb can put out 10000 LUX so are pretty bright.
Here is a link to the sight and below is a pic of the bulb http://www.hightechlighting.com/prod...oducts_id/1138
Thanks for any help, I would like to start getting some frags for more color in my tank

that is pretty interesting. the bulbs most people use are in the 10K range. but one of the most popular bulbs out there is the iwasaki, which is at 6.5K.

That is a intersting idea. It should work if the light put out the same specture as traditional lights. Who know, this maybe the new wave in tank lighting!!!

Welcome to TRT!!!
there have been some preliminary tests using frags and a couple of the ultra-bright LED's. these were very close ranged tests. the LED's were placed within inches of the frags. the frags did show signs of growth and maintained colour in the areas affected by the LED's.
they do not seem to have the penetrating power that MH's do yet, but do look promising for replacing flourescents though.
the colour technology is also behind MH bulbs. LED's have a very narrow colour band so many different colours will needed to get closer to a full spectrum.

As soon as these are more affordable they may be a good option for reef tanks. www.lumileds.com

For what it's worth, I switched my 2 gallon desktop 'father's day present' tank to a frag growout tank ( got tired of killing bolivian rams). At walmart I found a low watt bulb (fixture takes 15 watt max) called compact flourescent, I think. The color was listed somewhere around 5 or 6k, if memory serves. ANyway, the frags are defininetly growing well. The yellow polyps each have a new one starting at the base, and the hairy mushrooms expand fully once the light is turned on. Am using the same thing in my refugium/reverse lighted sump on my 55 reef. So far so good, and talk about cheap lighting!

Im very interested in using LEDS for reef lighting... I have been using PC for my ten gallon tank for some time. After i found out that there have been experimental trials with the use of LEDS, i figured i'd give it a try. i went on and purchased 72 white LEDS(MCD=4000) and 48 Blue LEDS (MCD 7500) and installed them into my aquarium hood along with a 24 power compact. The results, thus far, have been good. i do notice a flourish in activity with my corals. My next plan is to install more LEDS to see if i can replace my PC completely. I am into trying things new and seeing the results, so we will see if this works.
