Question

How to Question: DC Computer Fans and AC-to-DC Adapter

I have two Nexus 120 mm Real Silent Case Fans and I think I can power them with one 3-12VDC/800mA Regulated AC-to-DC Adapter.

Am I correct in my understanding that since the Adapter is 800mA (.8 Amp) and the fans are .30 Amp each that I can run both fans on the one Adapter?

Since the Adapter can range from 3-12 Volts I plan on using it to change the fan speed. The fans are rated to take a voltage range of 6.5-13.8 Bolts. Will this work?

yes, you are correct on all counts!!!

go for it, let me know how quiet those fans are. i am always looking out for quiet fans. i have found most of the time it is not the air movement that is annoying but the vibration of the fan itself.

Thank you for the quick reply Geoff! I hope to have the hood complete sometime in January, I am really hoping the fans are quite.

If you are interested I would love to add you to my map of reef keepers. Details in my signature. BTW, yes I would love a Guiness.

Yep, you got it.

IME, 120mm fans are quiet and move a lot of air (I have four in my computer case). The smaller fans (80mm and less) rotate at higher speeds making them vibrate and produce more noise than 92's and 120's.

Alrighty! A question I can *really* help with.

Noise:
Those fans will work fine. Depending on how you are mounting them, use either some rubber washers or cut up an old foamy mousepad to isolate vibration, which will obviously reduce noise. If you use a guard on the fan, make sure it doesn't have a lot of tiny openings since those will induce turbulence and noise.

Voltage:
DC motors are an interesting thing, especially the ones in your fans. They require significantly more voltage and current to start up than they do to maintain speed once running. The point of this is that you can save some power and noise by running them at less than their 12v rating, and you can also overdrive them if you need more cooling.

I'd start by trying them at around 9v. They'll need about that much to spin up, and then would probably be able to continue spinning and flowing good down to around 6v. There are circuits that can be built to do this for you, but I suspect that's more trouble than you want to go through.

Also, I wouldn't use an adjustable power supply wallwart if you have other places it can be used. Instead, I would find an unused 9 or 10v fixed voltage one out of the junk drawer/basement/attic and use that instead.

Hth!

Blorton thanks for the information. You just explained some experimental results I ran into. The fans would start at 12-7 volts but once I had them spinning they would run on 5 or 6. Very interesting. Your idea about using discarded power supplies is a good one except this summer we cleaned house and all old electronics when out with the trash. The variable unit was only $20 with tax, so not too bad. I am not really sure I need it though, at 12 Volts the fans push a steady brease I can not really see reducing it with the lighting I am trying to keep cool in the canopy.

When I tested them they were totally silent with no vibration I could feel.

Glad to help out. Sorry to hear about the warts being tossed - I've been there too.

Even though the fans may feel quiet and smooth now, I would still opt for rubber mounting them. Even the quietest and smoothest fans can induce sympathetic vibrations. Particularly when more than one is used because they will not turn at the exact same speed and a dissonant component gets induced.

You can get thin precut rubber sheets at some computer stores for that, ratshack might have some too.

Are you going to screw them straight in on a vent opening or do some sort of L bracket mount?

I was considering mounting them to the outside back of the canopy blowing in. I will have circular holes the diameter of the fan and so corners can still screw in. This way I will keep the fans and the electrical connections out of the hot wet canopy air. I will have a couple of passive holes on the top for air to escape.

I had me fans in the canopy on timers, offset from the lights on and off by 15 so that when the lights went off, the fans kep running for 15 min to prevent that heat build up after the bulbs turned off, maybe overkill for VHO but MH will sit and cook for a bit after shut down
