Help with DIY Skimmer

Hi all,

This is my first DIY project so any feed back good or bad will be appreciated.

I am hoping to build a venturi skimmer something a long the diagram below for my 328 USgallon tank. As you can see the main reaction chamber is going to be 6” diameter and about 24” tall, the inner reaction chamber is going to be 3” diameter, but I do have some questions.

Would it be better making the main chamber taller maybe 30” as I have the space?.

The pump I am thinking of using is a Eheim 1260(2400litres/hour) or 1262(3400l/h) which one would be better or will a have to go bigger?.

Is the position of the venture ok? or should I go with a straight pipe set up?.

Which out of the two setup would be best?

Many thank if any of you could help me on this matter.

Welcome to TRT HueCity!

I would do the straight venturi (JMO, both will work), go as tall as you have space for; other than that I say it looks like a good plan. Are you using all PVC? Can't wait to see pics

Sorry for the long delay but I have been overseas.

I thinking of dropping the venturi skimmer and going for something modelled on a Deltec AP851. I have all the acrylic now, 8” tube which can be up to 39” if I want, and all the other bits of pipe work bar the pump. I just have a couple of question for you all out there.

1. How tall should I go with the main reaction chamber?.

2. What pump should I go for (240V) I see lots of needle wheel pump in the US (110V) for sale, but I can not find any 240V for love of money!.

3. If can not find any needle wheel pump, I was thinking of using a 3m bristle disc in a Eheim 1260, what size of disc and will I have to modify the pump?.

Thanks for any help on this topic as the pump problem is holding back the project.

Thanks HueCity
