Phil, Before proceeding any further i would recommend that you first stop and look and re-evaluate why you have so many things to plug in. If you had a 500 gallon tank i could see needing that many plugs but crap man, what are you running. I would look to see how you could simplify your tank by removing unneeded equipment. less is more.

im not into electrical as you can tell.. but commen sense..woudnt a power strip that always 6 to 8 plugs be the same as me hooking uP 8-10 outlets in a chain formation
a power strip hooks up to one outlet in a wall that can contain up to 10 plugs
woudnt hook'n up 10 outlets side by side then plugged into a wall outlet be the same?
i was making this power board due to oulets wasted on a powerstrip due to my large timers that i have to my lighting system.. i have 3 timers that waste alot of smace on a power strip... large power strips and some power strips with built in timers are pricey!!!
as i wrote above i have 16 plugs.. i was making an extra 4 for possible pumps later on for more circulation if i wanted them..heres a diagram i made to show how do i hook them up side by side....my next post on here will be the diagram..be back in 10 min...............................
i wasnt plug'n this whole board into one outlet.. i was going to use the one behind my tank and one other outlet in my living room
i bought 2-10 pack outlets at home depot that cost $3 for each box of 10 and paid like 40 cents for each of the ON and OFF switch
so all meterials with out wire cost me under $10 so far
i see your point on a hazard if i hooked up everything to one outlet, BUT.. im not
i will have a power serg on each of the 2 plugs on the board
woudnt this work now?

The biggest difference is if you use power strips you will know the wiring is done correctly and that removes one possible hazard. Any outlets you wire yourself will need to go into a NEC approved electrical housing. I would NOT house it in wood. You can shop around and find power strips where the outlets are spaced far enough apart for timers and power converters.
Every electrical appliance you have will have a power consumption rating. It will either be on a data plate or will be included in the paperwork that came with it. You should make a list of these items with their power consumption and find out how much total power you need. If you want to list them here we can help you out.

BTW you don't neccessarily need surge protectors. You can get power strips without surge protection for a lot less than surge protectors.

Wow. With all due respect phil, you asked advice and were given several warnings and alternatives by some folks who know what they are talking about. (you admitedly arent familiar with electricity) You are dealing with salt that corodes the contacts over time (as mentioned) and water. I hope for your sake that you escape the laws of physics. Oh and all of those outlets you bought, why didnt you get GFCI's?
Dude, you are realy heading for problems. Please listen to experienced people and leave it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Phil, I am really worried about where this is going. You have no experience with electrical wiring. You need somewhere to plug in 15 things, yet you are building something with 40 outlets. Why? Why would you need/want to build something with 25 more outlets than you need? You could easily find space for all of your stuff using 3 UL approved power strips.

A fire hazard waiting to happen. That gauge wire has a limit on current draw, and with all the bonus impedance you've added to the loop, you're in bad shape. I wouldnt run more than 10 amps through that, at most.
