Ok one last question. My wall studs are not located exactly where I want to put the brackets so mounting the brackets directly to the studs means they won't be symetrical. My choices are: 1) Paint and mount two 1x4's horizontally on the wall behind the tank. Mount the brackets to the 1x4's. This plan would have to be sumitted to management and probably would be denied without several appeals. 2) Use toggle bolts and mount the brackets directly to the wall where I want them. The walls are plywood paneling so I doubt the toggle bolts could possibly pull out.

imo what's the differance between mounting small 1x2's as a mounting bracket, vs mounting the toggle bolts.
you're still going to put a small hole in the wall
i think if you painted a few small 1x2's like you mentioned, maybe have them the same color as your tank or light fixtures. then mount the light mount bracket, to the 1x2's..
just an idea.

that should work fine, check into molly bolts also, i think their load ratings are higher. but either way i think they are over 100lbs each. is the paneling backed by drywall? this would help a lot and be plenty strong.
i nice finished 1X2 would also look pretty nice if finished well. you could use it to hang pictures off of. the problem with this is that the ends of the board need to be anchored, or more specifically the board needs to be anchored securley on either side of the bolts used to hang the fixture. this could lead to a very long board on one side depending on how far off the studs are.
either way would work.

Thanks. I figured toggle bolts would work, I just needed assurance. I don't think there's much chance of it being a problem. I don't think the entire fixture weighs more than 40#. As far as I know there is no sheetrock behind the paneling. The house was built in the early 70's and dark paneling and shag carpet was the in thing then.
So G~. When ya coming down again????

I used two of these to mount the single MH fixture over my 20 gal. It's secured just into the sheetrock using a special sheetrock anchor. I'm pretty sure I can buy up to 20" arms for this system. Three toggle bolts for each of these should be plenty. Ya think?
