good news about the uber skimmer
Ok I picked up some live rock today and about 40 gallons of water from the tank. The tank got a water change and I got the old water. The tank has no HA and looks very clean and healthy but has a low bioload. Its a 130 with 5 small fish (largest was a diamond goby) and a hand full of corals (largest was a 5 inch diameter devils hand). It has a SSB of oolitic sand. They are running a kent nautilous skimmer.
Well, my skimmer "test" system/rock cooker has about 50 gallons of water in it total. I get some very thick white foam that goes into the collection cup. Tom, geoff and randy told me that the only true test of a skimmer is to run old tank water through it. So I took about 3 gallons of the old tank water I got today and dumped it into the test system. Well within a few moments it began bubbling out of the riser tube. A little less thick than what had been coming out of it but it was not white it was a light tanish green.
Its still needs to be quite wet to get it out of the tube but I think at a 50:3 delution its doing pretty good. Tomorrow I'm going to swap out the rest and see what happens.

I think my riser tube is about 2 inches too wide. Its kind an easy fix though. Not what I wanted but hey trial and error is about 90 percent of DIY.
The water is about 40 gallons used water and 50 gallons of the water that has been in the cooking system.

Why do you think its too wide? Foam looks good. Not that I want any with an olive in it or anything...

I feel like I'm going to need to run it really wet to get it out. I'm just a little nervous maybe. I already need some more used water.

It could just be that there isn't enough ppm of junk to pull? Maybe? It looks like its making a nice head. This is the monster right? If so it could be that it just hasn't met a challenge yet! You're recycling the same old water in a large skimer, no additional solids day to day. Just a thought.

I was recycling the same old water with close to 0 DOCs in it. Now it has 40 gallons of used water from a 130 that I put in it today and 50 gallons that have been in it for almost 2 weeks.
Here is that pic I tried posting earlier.
