Question

From here to there. Plumbing question

hello-
getting ready to set up a 75gl and plum it to the basement.

should I use PVC as much as possible to prevent Kinks in the overflow and returns?

Also, It's a standard All-Glass tank with overflow built in. the return comes back up through the overflow. Do you think I should have it drilled again on the opposite side of the tank and just let the water spit back into the tank via a bulkhead?

I plan on running the tank into a 30gl sump downstairs and back up using a MAG19. Total is like 10ft head pressure with a few small bends.

Any suggestions or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any pics of sumps would too...

are you going to have any additional flow besides the return?

what do you want to house in the aquarium?

what about closed loops?

use PVC wherever possible for the reason you mentioned, plus it is dirt cheap in long lengths.

you may need to get a larger bulkhead for the drain, not necessarily for the return. the output on the pump i believe is a 3/4" so increasing this will give you some more flow, but not as much as limiting the # of elbows would save.

the drain will be your big problem, do you know what the overflow is rated for?

Cool

Closed Loops

I know nothing about Closed loop systems...But would love to hear more about them.

I have a 65 tank right now that will be moved into it. Coral, Fish, LR etc...

I am not sure what the overflow is rated for but I will check.

Thanks for the info. Any info on a closed loop would be great too.

Party On!

some quick calcs for you.

at 10' the mag 18 will be about 950gph

a 1-3/4 pipe will drain 1800gph
a 1-1/2 pipe will drain 1300gph
a 1" pipe will drain right at 600gph

looking at this i would prolly gowth at least a 1.5" drain. this will give you a little breathing room.

here is my CLS. it is real system, but not the most elegant. to be elegant you need to drill holes. CLS are the best way to add flow without worrying about overflows and added bubbles.

Geoff what are the figures on a Mag12 at 10'?
Why not set up standpipes on bothe the 1" drain and use the 3/4" return as a drain as well, you can run the return of the back and point it anywhere

Mag 12 at 10' 600gph.

that will get you about 900gph drain capacity.
