Freaked by how cheap stands are built
Okay, so I am in the market for a stand for my new set up. In the past I have always built them however this time I am considering buying. However, after checking out the stands, I am amazed at how poorly they are built. I assumed that they had some type of 2x4 shell for support but none of them did. Even the ones for the 180Gl didn't have any support, they were just plywood or particle board.
An I over doing it when I build a 2x4 shell and then build the cabinet around it every time I build a stand? If so, I will build one like I see in the stores and save a load of time and cash on materials.
What have you all done?

plywood is extremely strong on end. this is not the weak point. the jointery is the important part of the stand. if these are done well then the stand will be extremely strong. there is a reason they only warranty their tanks if their stands are used.
now i am not saying that you can not make a better stand, but those stands are plenty strong.

I was amazed at the stand my 75g came with as well. I carried it from the store to my truck with one hand, it is incredibly light. The joints don't look all that strong either, but It is still holding my tank up.

I have an oceanic 72 Gallon stand and it seems very well built. The top is solid.

Personally, I would never buy a stand. most of the stands I've looked at, well are simply P.O.S. Why would i pay 400 dollars for a stand that doesn't even have raised panels. Also, the business warn that "home-made stands will not work." any decent workworker with the right tools and make a well made stand that is very strong.
Currently, I am building a very nice stand out of oak for my 55 gallon. When completed it will have 2 panelled doors, panelled sides, two pull drawers, and molding that goes around the top. The tank is also, inset into the stand to cover up the band that goes around. Also, I am building a complementary hood that will cover the band and have molding as well. My stand is almost completed and is being build for under 100 dollars.
oh I can post pictures later.

this is lawyer speak. they are trying to cover themselves for those people that do not have decent woodworking skills and attempt to make stands out of balsa wood.

Be warned however, that if you build your own stand and have a problem your are SOL. A member of our reef club had new a tank that started leaking. Oceanic said too bad.

The oceanic stands don't seem to be so bad, I have one that is solid wood. but that particle board s*** scares me. Have you ever seen particle board when it gets wet.

Used 55 setup I bought came with a tired particle board stand. That stuff and water DO NOT MIX! I made my own out of nice 1/4" plywood over 2 x 4 frame. $75 and lotsa work. But no more worries.

My stand that just came with my 75 gal is a standard All-Glass stand. It is constucted out of Pine planks and pine supports. It is **** light but it seems pretty solid. I think it looks pretty nice too. Probably better looking than one I would have made anyway :P. The only thing I think it could improve on would be to have bigger doors so that it is easier to get underneith it.
