First Tank Build
Hey Guys,
I just finished my first acrylic aquarium! It is a 9*9*12 (taller looking tank) desktop nano...I am not sure what I am putting in it, but the tank holds water (had a small leak that I repaired...). I had an old industrial light that when you opened it up...you found three 13 watt PC's inside...GX23 base! SO...this little baby's gonna have a hood (probably wood) with 3 13watt PC's in it. I'm thinking either nano reef or nano planted tank...not sure right yet. Anyway, I wanted to share the good DIY news. I will have an acrylic desktop tank with 39 watts of PC light for a mere $6 in parts! Gotta love DIY.

Sweet... Was it hard? Show some pics. I have never worked with Acrylic before, but I am going to try it really soon.

It wasn't too hard. I used a band saw to cut the 1/4" acrylic that I bought from the scrap pile at the local plastics store. I sanded down the edges to make them a little straighter, and I used the thick gel (I wish I would have had the stuff to do the wicking into the edges (the thin glue). I will definitely use a table saw next time to keep the edges straight. Wasn't too challenging, and considering it is my first tank, the edges (the butt joints) are a little messy, and aren't completely clear (bubbles). It holds water, and looks relatively good. I'm at school right now, so I'll post some pictures later.

I am going to build a sump and Skimmer. I cut all the pieces on my table saw and thought they looked a little rough (they had a little saw kirf). Is that ok to glue together? How did you glue it together? Useing pins?

the smoother the cut the better, but light kerf marks are not a problem. if they were perfectly smooth than you can use the capillary method and some Weld-On 3. if there are tiny gabs when placed together than use Weld-On 16.

Picture of Homebuilt Tank with Aquaclear Filter
yeah, I didn't have too many marks...I could have done capillary...
But...here's the final product with no hood. I just found an old Aquaclear I'll probably use.
