fiberglass???
Im making a DIY plenum system for a 220g and followed the cutlist on the GARF website, but i couldnt find nylon screening anywhere. We ended up with fiberglass mosquito netting stuff, but i cannot find any info on whether or not its safe in reefs... anyone got any ideas?

Welcome to TRT!
I'm not very familiar with that material, but I do have fiberglass rods in my tank that have not shown to be a problem. And many folks use fiberglass tubs as sumps, so I wouldnt be terribly worried about it if you're sure that it's only fiberglass. Maybe someone else has more knowledge, though.

is it mosquito netting or fiberglass window screen?
Are you sure you want to go with a plenum?, thats kind of old tech FWIW

its technically stated as a sun screening type thing, but its the same material as the screen doors. I know there are newer things than plenums, but they seem to last forever and have been proven to reduce the effects of a bioload on your tank. I prefer the tried and tested =]

Fiber glass is relatively benign as far as potential to leach matter/chem's into the water column. However, I don't know if the screening you are thinking of using would have been coated with anything. IMO I would have a look around and see what other materials are out there if you cannot find any difinitive info on the screening.

I left this alone at first, but I got to go with Doug here. I'd really question the comment about them seeming to last forever. Having relied on similar biological types of filtrations in the past, and having expereinced the effects of having one stop functioning, I would highly recommend investing some time researching other methodologies. Food and wastes introduced to the tank aren't going to disappear; I find that manual removal of wastes is the only sure-fire, long term approach for setting up a tank. Don't misunderstand, plenums, refugiums, DSBs, etc., work for a time, but their capabilities and effectiveness don't match that of good water flow, a good skimmer, and siphoning any collected detritus.

Sorry, i kind of lost track of my own thread...
Im still undecided about the plenum. I have heard many good stories about them, and been warned against them from those same people, LOL. What would be a good option besides a plenum, DSB, or epoxy/FSB? thanks for the help. =) also, i started a build thread for anyone whos interested, although i think most of you guys have already posted on it :
