Durso overflow sucking air
I hooked up a diy durso dual standpipes in my 180g and fired up a mag12 on it. The overflow itself seems pretty quiet. At first it was creating a siphon and I had to drill larger vent holes. That problem is solved, but it is also getting large air bubbles going into the sump from the drain lines. These bubbles make noise. Is there a way to stop the air from getting into the drain line in the first place?

i have the sump supply line from the tank above the water line of the sump. this allows for trapped air to exit, eliminating the "gurgles". is your sump supply line submerged in the sump reservoir?

Yes, it is submerged. If I move it above the water line, I hear the water splashing into the sump. It does let the air out without the bubbles though.

i am also still experimenting with this problem. so far the best thing i have tried is making a angled piece of pipe starting above the water line and ending at the water line. on the top side of this angled piece of pipe i have drilled a lot of holes. i am still experimenting with the hole size. small holes seem to create little water launching holes. i have not tried really big holes yet, but this does quiet down the water a bit. it also seems to stop the flushing cycle that occurs with a below water level outlet.

Give this a try, The trap should creat enough back presure to cause the water to displace the air.

i'm game to try also, where is the water level in relation to the p-trap? is the sump box representative of the water only and not the box?
thanks,
G~

OK I put my PVC where my mouth is and here is what I came up with,
I could not manage to displace all of the air and I even tryed drilling a vent at the top of the trap.
How ever the noice level now is equel to an alkiselzer, (plop plop fiz fiz)
Much lower. As my sump is out side of my office in my gerage I've never worried about the noice. But now it cant be heard over the pumps and skimmer much quieter.

My final shot at it and it makes close to zero noise.
