Drip Top Off

I was thinking of doing a syphon/drip top off. Has anyone ever done one of these. I heard it's a good way of doing it as long as it's at the right pace. All input is appreciated even if you have never done it. I would like to know what you guys think could go wrong with this method.

which method are you going to do? float valve or vacuum? the vacuum method is uber simple, but requires that your reservior be air tight, or you will be dumping the entire top off at once.

the simplest top off is get an airtight container with a hose coming out of it. put the container above the tank with the hose part as low as possible. so water can flow down the hose. place the hose at the water height you want to keep. have it so the hose is vertical. water will pour/drip (depending on hose diameter) out of the hose till the hose gets submerged. at this point no air can get into the container and the flow stops till evaporation lowers the water level to let more air in.

the smaller the tank the smaller the hose should be. in most cases a 1/4" airline hose should work. this is not recommended for use as a kalk reactor. the kalk can clog the hose.
