Question

DIY tank questions

I recently had a major problem with my tank. Anyway ive decided to just sell everything and go ahead and build my dream tank(glass). Ok so i put everything in Garf.org . My demensions are height: 24inches, width 36inches, and lenght: 96inches it is roughly 359 gallons. The thing that has me worried is that it says use 3/8inche glass. Is this too thin? In the plans it says you have braces but i dont have a middle brace only around the rim....so this has me worried...anyone see any problems with using glass this thin for such a big tank? and other advice is appreciated. thanx

I think that would be too thin, my tank is an all glass 180 which is 72x24x24 and it's made of 1/2 inch glass. Some of that thickness is for safety factor but if you were to go to 96 inches I would definately use 1/2 or thicker.

that also seems a bit thin. very seldom is it a problem to go with thicker glass when building a tank.

are you going to build the tank yourself or have it built to your specifications?

i will be building the tank. I called a glass store and they said with my demensions one piece of half inch thick glass would cost $400!!! is there somewhere else i should be looking at for cheaper glass?

no, that is about what it costs. glass in larger sizes and thickness cost a fair amount of money. the cheapest tanks i have ever seen come from www.glasscages.com. the prices they quote are very close to what it would cost you to get the materials. this will give you a good ballpark for what you will be paying for minimally to get the glass for your tank.
