DIY Skimmer Advice

I'm in the process of a 55 gal build. Have'nt started on the sump build yet until I get everything figured out (rookie here). I'm in the DIY skimmer design phase and need advice. I've seen a few DIY skimmer designs and am trying to go with equip. I have if possible. I'de like to use the PH from my SeaClone (it's gotta go) and use it for the DIY skimmer. Been reading that I should have 600 - 800 gph flow but yet not have to much flow in the sump? I havn't purchased a return pump yet, thought I had better start with the DIY skimmer. Any advice, suggestions, as to sump and skimmer design so far. See attached. As always, all help is appreciated (good and bad).

I want to try to build one of those, to see if I can make it work. Only I want it counter current. It may give you some ideas or help on building yours.
