DIY Lighting Canopy

I am interested in Building a canopy Light hood and was wanting imput with what materials I should use. First off, I am an Electrician and have Access to F40T12 Daylight Bulbs and F40T12 Ballasts. Now my question, Should I use T12 or T8 Compact Lighting? Should I Use Fixtures or Just ballasts and Sockets? I plan on useing 4 Bulbs in order to mix the lighting. any other info that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Fish only tank or reef tank?

Fish only tank, just use the ballasts and bulbs you have. Would be quite nice lighting for fish IMO. No need to use the fixture, mount your ballasts and endcaps directly into the canopy, then cover the opening with plexiglass or glass.

Reef tank, use F42T12/HO ballasts with two of the F40T12 daylight bulbs you can get. This will overdrive them quite a bit, and give out much more white light. Be warned the bulbs will only last for about 6 months or so by doing this. You'll also want a similiar setup with actinic lamps for coral health and viewing pleasure.

Since you're an electrician, you have an even better option. Buy a metal halide ballast, put it into a PVC junction box, run a piece of sj cord to the lampholder mounted in your canopy. The following ballasts work great with Corallife and XM bulbs:

175 watt - Advance M57 magnetic ballast
250 watt - Advance M58 magnetic ballast
400 watt - Advance M59 magnetic ballast

I'm sure others work, but I've first hand expierience with these. Good Luck!

For a fish only tank, I think 2 of the 40" T12 daylights would make for a lovely display, without adding a ton of unwanted heat to your tank. GE makes some really nice true daylight tubes, but any full spectrum tube would be more than adequate.
