DIY hood

Has anyone tried building a hood frame without using nails/screws just glue? The glue is suppose to be stronger than the wood itself?

the old canopy for my 125g was made without nails. i used biscuits though. a glue joint is super strong if it is joinging long grain to long grain. joining long grain to end grain will not produce a strong joint. when joining end grains together you use a biscuit joint, or if you are really good a dovetail joint. these types of joints create good long grain to long grains glueing surfaces to produce a nice strong joint.

some people feel that the only REAL way to work with wood is without nails.

Glue is stronger then nails and screws, but lack the reinforcing that a nail or screw adds.

Also, it is common to use nails or screws to hold the pieces together while the glue is curing...

There is nothing wrong with using both, and I would reccomend using glue whereever possible, but keep in mind some things do need to be adjusted or removed at a later date, so dont glue everything, give it some thought...

Good luck
