DIY Group Projects.

there seems to be some interest in doing group projects. lets say every other month or so we work on a different DIY piece of equipment.

is this something you all would be interested in? what projects would you all be interested in?

Skimmer is one thing for Sure, Ca reactor, But on the top of My list i think at this time is a Kalk reactor. That I can add along with my MRC Ca reactor.

i am a little hesitant about doing a Ca reactor. the body of them is inexpensive, but the rest of the components necessary to run it are rather expensive.

do we want budget oriented, or full blown snazzy looking?

Are there budget Ca or Kalk reactor designs? if so...I'm interseted.

Until those plans come through...is there a DIY dosing system for commercial liquid Ca+ and Alk? If so, caould it be made to dose very small quantities of these additives...4-6 mls per day? I tried the Kent drip setup (like an IV setup) and it worked well, but I couldn't restrict the flow enough (never reached <20ml per day)

How about one of those carbon thingies (yeah, thats the technical name). I read a while back about a DIY system for increasing the efficiency of activated carbon by putting it in a tube and pumping water through it very slowly (I know this description sucks...but I can't find the link that describes it).

Budget :

kalk reactor can be done for less than $100. the body for a Ca reactor (which for all intense and purposes the same thing) can also be done for about $100.

a carbon filter is a good easy one!

stands and canopies are tough to do as a group since every tank is different. this could make a good topic to discuss, but i do not think it would work as a group build.

A carbon filter is a good idea, I like to have one that can be ran when needed and then shut done and cleaned easy.

I think its a great idea!! Skimmers, Canopys, Stands, Sumps, CLS, etc......

Depending on how much the projects will cost i could join in on the ones i would like to have for my tank.

How about we do it all! Starting with the things that would come first ion a build. The stand, canopy etc..and go down the line to a nice set up!

Sounds cool, I really like the idea of progressing through projects 'til you have a full system.

do we want this as a group build with the mods coming up with parts lists and places to get the stuff, or just a discussion on what is needed and you all figure out the parts.

I think the group build would be better. Some members might not be DIY savy and would be more inclined to enter the group build vs doing it alone.
