DIY Frag tanks

Here is a thread that I started in our local club forum, on page three I have some pictures of the small frag tanks that I built. They are 18" long, by 5" high by 5" deep, they are going to be stacked on shelfs so water will flow from the 2 of the tanks into the other two and then drain back to the sump. Going to light them for now with just standard 22" dual bulb T5's but at some point might experiment with LED lighting on 2 of the tanks.

I have my TRT set to show 40 posts per page so for me there is no page 3 so it gives me that message.

I like it

Any issues with nutrient depletion going from tank to tank like that? I have thought about trying something similar to that but have it go through each tank instead of the split path.

Looks nice.

Thanks Randy, I do plan of feeding directly from the pump intead of just having them over flow into each other. There will be two on the left that will have the overflow flowing into the lower two, but the lower two will also be fed from the pump. Not sure if there is going to be a problem or not as I am just getting this put together, I probably won't have these running water in them for 2-3 months as I need to swap out my other frag tank, and refuguim/DSB.

I did fix the link as well, having it going to the first page of posts

As small as they are, I don't think you would ever see nutrient depletion even if you ran one outlet and daisy chained them all together. But, running each one from the pump you definitely shouldn't.

I think the link had more to do with the way I have my TRT set to show 40 posts per page instead of 10. For you, at 10 posts per page, there is a page 3 and thats what the -3 in the URL denotes (I think anyway), but when I remove the -3 it takes me to the first page. Not sure why, just know it works for some and not for others, depending on how they have TRT set to display threads.

Just posted an update in the thread, I got one of the tanks painted, wanted to see if the I thought the color was right, I am almost thinking I should have gone a little darker but then again this might be ok.

Here is the link again so you don't have to go back to the first post.

Get them full of frags and then ask people what color it is. They won't even notice that its painted. But the color looks fine.

Ok last update for a little while, the new 40 gallon frag tank has been in for awhile and is doing great, need to do a water change but will do that sometime this week. The DSB is in and running smoothly, the Macro Tanks is in and running good, I am not getting the tumbling like I had hoped but the flow is really good; added a second overflow. I decided to only use 2 of the small frag tanks and those are in now, and running, light over the one and I put a shallow sand bed in there. Those lights are going to run only as long as the Halides do to start out with, still need to pickup a second light, going to add eggcrate/acyrlic rack for frag in that one.... Here are a couple of pictures, the first of the 2 tanks and the second of the plate coral frags in the tank...they should do better in this tank as there is sand.... Crossing fingers "hopefully"

I will keep monitoring water conditions to make sure they stay stable as far as phosphates and nitrates, if they do I think I am going to wait until this fall to move forward with the plans to remove the crushed coral, I am definitely going to do it but that would be a good fall project....will keep you posted as what I decide to do and how the small frag tanks are working...

Ok there was more information there than just the frag tanks but I have a thread in the LARK forumn that explains what I am doing this year as far as the tank....here is the link if you want to check it out....
