DIY Frag Rack

Just finished this today , my take on the frag rack. I am using nickel plated DXO2's on the inside and found out that using two of these would not work, so using DXO6's on the outside.

The PVC caps are 3/4" and I cut a "spacer" of 3/4" PVC to fill the inside of the cap and allow the 1/8" thick DXO2 to fit or the DXO6 3/8" to fit and close off the opening with a piece of 1/8" acrylic. I used #16.

On the next rack, I'll just use the DXO6's as there are stronger, thicker but cost more and are on sale 20% off - don't know how long
On the outside shot, the left cap has not been trimmed off yet, that's why the rectangular "foot". Next one will be little larger and wider and will need 3 (6) magnets instead of 2 (4)

It appears that the DX06 are part of a Jan special so I would guess through Feb 1 for the 20% off. What thickness acrylic is that? And, what range of glass and/or acrylic do you think they would hold through without being too weak or too strong through the glass? That project looks a whole lot better and cheaper (dollar wise) than trying to use mag floats to hold them in place.

The tank is 3/8" thick, 2 DXO6's would work for 3/8" and thicker to maybe 3/4".

I ordered DXO2 thinking that it would work w/62lbs of pull force NOT so the guy at K&J said that the DXO6's would work better. Since I already enclosed 2 of the DXO2's, I thought that if I used the 6 on the outside that might work - it does but I only have 5 of the 6's and 10 of the 2's. Oh well

Nothing I have is more than 1/2" thick so they should work fine for those. The smaller tanks I have are 1/8" glass (10G tank) and possibly 3/16 or 1/4 on my 20 Breeder. The 12G I have is 1/4" acrylic. Wondering if they would be too strong on the thinner glass and make them harder to get apart to move a frag rack.

That is a pretty cool frag rack design.

Have you thought about putting edges in it to keep the frags from being pushed off by the flow or snails?

You are over thinking it I wouldn't worry about the force used to take the magnet off, if you enclose it, like I did you just move the magnet away (slide it off) and it's the same way to attach it, slide it on. This way you don't have to worry about cracking the glass if it grabs it out of you hand, and it will.

I would get the DXO6's because of the weight that will be on the rack as it gets loaded and with smaller magnets it'll probably the rack would just slide to the bottom of the tank. jmo

No worries there if you use those mushroom shapped frag holders and the stem part just sits in the hole.

Good point about using plugs instead of squares or flat disks.
