DIY Acrylic Overflow Box ???

I just got my 2 (1 1/2") drain holes drilled for my overflow on my 180 build and was thinking about fabricating the internal overflow box myself.
The overflow box will be centered in the back of the tank.

Can anyone please give me some feedback on the procedure?

It does not seem like that monumental of a DIY project. I was thinking that you cut a piece of acrylic to size then route the surface skimming teeth and then somehow make the bends, probably using heat. The bending is the part I am most curious of, and also where can I purchase the acrylic material (black), if in fact acrylic is the material of choice.?.?

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appriciated.

you can make it out of acrylic or glass. Personally, i wouldn't use teeth at all, i'd use a coast to coast style overflow. Do a goggle search on Calfo or coast to coast overflows and you'll see what i mean. They are more of a weir type overflow without teeth and are better at surface skimming

I'd use glass and then have piece of black acrylic cut to cover the front so you don't see the plumbing. Just silicone the acrylic to the glass and you should be set.

or you can go the Krylon Fusion and paint the inside of the glass overflow, it's inert once dry.

Build you a wooden box to match the inside dimensions of the overflow box you want. Take the acrylic and attach it to the wooden box to secure one end. I used duct tape to simply hold it in place. Then take a heat gun and heat the acrylic up where you want to bend it. Steady heat (don't stay in one place long) and bend it around the corner, then repeat on the other end to make the "U" shaped piece.

The disadvantage of slots is that it cuts your linear distance in half (or more). The advantage of the slots is that if the tank isn't exactly level, or the overflow is a little off, then the slots will still allow it to drain water all the way around the box.

If you have an acrylic shop nearby, they should have or be able to get black. Otherwise just use clear, scuff it good, then kyrlon it black.
