Maybe this is a dumb question, and correct me where I am wrong, but do sumps rely on biological filtration only? Do you use another form of filtration as well? I am a real DIY type guy, and am thinking of building my own sump, but I am kinda confused as to how this could be a better filter than what I already have. I can understand the benefits of adding the extra water, and hiding the heater and skimmer, it is just the filtration factor to remove debris that has me confused. Try not to laugh at me too much.

Well as I understand it, A reef tank is supposed to only have biological filtration, and maybe some carbon for chemical. I have added filterpads and floss because I dont like to see anything floating around in my tank. I may get a 100 micron (or smaller if I can find it) filter sock to put on the intake to my sump and throw some carbon in soon. But untill then I am using the filter pads. For Bio I have a DIY Denitrator and Deep Sand Bed in the sump, along with all my live rock. Also have alot of Chaeto Macro Algea in the sump too.

I dont totally rely on it. The return outlet in the aquarium is only about 1/4" under water so if something happens it wont drain more than a couple of gallons.

If you have any questions let us know, were here to help. What size tank do you have? What size sump are you gonna be building? I bought my glass dividers for $3 each at lowes they cut them to size for me for free too. Got the 20 Gal L at petsmart for $31.

One of the easiest ways to set baffles in a sump is to install the sump with no baffles. Fill the tank until the sump is full, this is the power off level. Then turn the pump on and mark the water level in the sump. All baffles that make contact with the floor of the sump must be at or lower than that mark.
Good luck,
