denitrification methods

Does any one know of any DIY denitrification methods? I only have a 30 gal. tank and dont really have the room to put a ton of lr or ls in. Does any one have some plans?

Marc at www.melevsreef.com just installed something (check the reeflog), but a simple setup would involve maybe 100 feet or more of coiled airline tubing (or other small diameter tubing) stuffed in a dark container (salt bucket with lid maybe?). Flow water through the tubing at a slow rate (1-3 drips a second). Over a couple weeks you should notice some effect. I've never done it, though, so I can't really speak too much to how well it would work.

Why are you pursuing this in the first place? Long term, I think you'll be more successful eliminating the problem with nitrates.

the problem with denitrators is when the power goes off. those systems crash in a hurry without any flow in them. if every you are in a power outage. the first thing you need to do is remove the denitrator from the system and empty it. if not than the hydrogen sulfides in the denitrator can get into the tank and cause all kinds of problems.

nitrates are also not nearly as problematic as originally thought. it takes very little LR to keep nitrates down. if you have any kind of cannister/wet/dry/HOB filter on the tank, these can be nitrate factories if not cleaned out weekly.
