CPR overflow vs. drilling
I am going back and forth between 3 options: 1. buying a second 55G tank with less scratches that is already drilled 2. buy a second tank that is not drilled and find someone locally that can help me do it 3. buying a CPR overflow instead of drilling.
Questions:
1. Has anyone had good experience with the CPR overflows that they would recommend this over drilling or would not recommend them?
2. Can any tank be drilled, I've heard that some cannot be?
If you are wondering why I am not drilling it myself, is that it seems like something I would screw up. Actually, something I would definately screw up.

The CPR is one of the less trustworthy overflows out there. Look for a used lifereef overflow, or another U-tube style. If you run them correctly the risk of failure is very, very low

I have a tidepool, it works ok.It flows up to 6oo gph. Been running for 1 and half years and no floods. But have to make sure no air builds up in u tube.

Recently purchased the Eshopps 1200gph for my 80g tank. I could have probably done just fine with something a bit smaller, but this unit has 2 1" bulkheads. If one would ever get clogged up I at least have a backup. Been running it about 2 weeks with zero problems. Was like $70 or so can't be positive.
The one thing I did notice with the HoB overflow is that you have to have enough flow rate thru the siphon u tube to make any air bubbles pass so they don't end up at the top of the tube and cause the siphon to break. I would assume that to be true with most HoB overflows. I run the 1200gph with a mag7 pump on the return and I have no problems currently. I did a little research and the box got some decent reviews and was affordable.

Has anyone had any experiences with power outages and their overflow not failing? I like hearing that specific overflows are good, but I would actually like to hear that they did not fail... and I was told 1X already that CPRs weren't that great, but I'm starting to buy into that now.

I did kind of test the Eshopps sort off. While building the sump and adjusting aqua scaping I did shut off the return pump a few dozen times. Had it off for over 24hrs once and each time I started the system back up the Eshopps box started right up.
I also heard some negative feedback on CPR boxes so I tried to avoid them. This is my only experience with an overflow box, maybe someone that has tried a couple can give ya some better options.

I have heard that lifereef overflows are very good. I currently use 5 CPR overflows and have never had a problem. I have 3 of the 1200GPH models and 2 of the 600GPH models. I run mine with the aqualifter pump as well.
Just my $.02

How do you use the Aqualifter pump?
Thanks for the feedback, has anyone had any specific overflow fail on them?

I replied to your PM...I hope you got them....In case of a power failure not only your over flow will go into your sump...but also any part of your return below the water level in your tank....will syphon back down to your pump.....with that being said...I did the power failure test...and my sump, handled all of the water being dumped from the return and overflow...the design of my overflow box , however, keeps a water level in both the inside box and the outside box, and mainly the U-Tube full of water...So now when the power is restored, since the syphon is not broken, when the inside box starts skimming and recieving water from the tank it goes back into the overflow and then into the sump.....I hope this helps...

Only a CPR... Twice. Then I bought the lifereef and never had a problem. The aqualifter pump was always the issue with the crp. i've heard of others running the line to a powerhead to eliminate the aqualifter, but I finally just got a new overflow.
