Canapy and Stand Wood types

I have a 55 gallon with a stand and I am going to attemp to build a custom canopy. I will be buying one of the 48" compact flour. retro fit kits. for approximately 230 watts of light. I was wondering what type of wood is best for this. I believe the stand is a white pine, but it is solid pieces..not plywood. Is plywood acceptable?, is there a type of wood that is more apt to withstand the rigors of heat from lights and saltwater exposure? Also, what is recommenedced to seal the wood with? any ideas??

thanks.

Plywood is fine. But I think You will be like the end result if You use solid pine like the stand. I have and oak stand and did the canopy with solid oak and got a pretty good match. It is hard to match them. The plywood is cheaper. Take Your time on it and make it the way You want it the first time

I will probably end up using solid pine. Do you have any suggestions for what I should seal the wood with? Is the stain enough??

Thanks.

for the canopy pain tthe inside white and seal it with marine poly. you want to make sure no water from the eveap. will warp the wood. another nice wod to use is cypress, but that is really really expensive.

you can make the support stand out of pine if you wan then wrap it in a skin or plywood, that woudl give it a ton of support.

You could use the plywood that has Oak on the other side too!
